Note: I’ll be writing about what I’ve learning as I start my job, and since it starts next week, I’m referring to this week as Week 0. Next week will be Week 1, etc.
Uncertainty. A word that brings images of anxiety and fear. Something to avoid.
But uncertainty also brings something else: opportunity. In life, there’s no peephole to see what’s on the other side of that door. Opportunity inherently comes with the idea that we can’t know everything. Every decision is just a choice with the best information in the moment.
Yet, in looking back at great decisions, we create these narratives that fit everything in place. That seems easy to do in retrospect, but as Steve Jobs famously said , we cannot connect the dots going forward, they only make sense later on. Your narrative is still being written, and today’s choices will only be connected later on.
The always wise Warren Buffet said to be greedy when others are fearful, and this not only applies to investing but also to every day life. It’s those moments of fear that separate the great from the rest. Uncertainty creates a vacuum, and nature always fills a vacuum. The question is whether you’ll be the one seizing the moment or someone else. Those who act first will reap the rewards, while others are left waiting for their time to come.
But that does not mean it’ll be easy. If it was easy, everyone would do it. And you’re not everyone, you want to be one of the truly few who live life on their own terms. That means taking the risk when the path is not defined, before the window has closed.
We can only ask for the courage to move forward. To do what we need to do when the path is not clear. If you’re scared, just take one step. Do one small thing, no matter how small, and move forward.
Life is a journey, filled with uncertainty. Perfect the now, embrace opportunity in uncertainty, and the future is yours.
