Batman Begins [Spoiler Alert]

I just watched Batman Begins, and it had a lot of deep messages, some I wanted to reflect on here. Bruce Wayne has to go through a long struggle to return to Gotham, and that was a decision he did not take lightly. In deciding to return, he said, “People need dramatic examples to shake them out of apathy and I can’t do that as Bruce Wayne. As a man, I’m flesh and blood, I can be ignored, I can be destroyed; but as a symbol… as a symbol I can be incorruptible, I can be everlasting.” The why for any action is so important, and it is clear that he can only succeed as the Batman because of his history in Gotham. If he were merely doing it for the fame, he would have either joined the League of Shadows in destroying Gotham or not returned at all.

Another constant theme is the importance of resilience. Bruce’s father always emphasized this, saying “And why do we fall, Bruce? So we can learn to pick ourselves up.” And at his worst moments, Alfred reminds Bruce of this fact.

Bruce Wayne: “I wanted to save Gotham. I failed.”
Alfred Pennyworth: “Why do we fall sir? So that we can learn to pick ourselves up.”
Bruce Wayne: “You still haven’t given up on me?”
Alfred Pennyworth: “Never.”

At that point, Bruce realizes he hasn’t failed; he’s merely stumbled while on the path to save Gotham. If even someone like Batman makes mistakes, no one can be perfect. That’s when our support systems are so important. Success cannot happen without caring friends and family, and Bruce would not have been successful without Alfred to take care of him after his parents were killed.

When Bruce returns to Gotham, he is nearly unrecognizable to people from his past.  Rachel, a friend from childhood, remarks, “Deep down you may still be that same great kid you used to be. But it’s not who you are underneath, it’s what you do that defines you.” Actions speak louder than words, and Bruce’s actions were not at the caliber of his past character. He would later go on to prove himself through good action, but it is a good reminder to not rest on our assumptions.
